Seafloor earthquake ruptures and mass wasting from the 2004 Mw 6.3 Les Saintes submarine earthquake

چکیده

Abstract The seismic hazard posed by submarine faults and the capacity of earthquakes to trigger mass wasting are poorly understood because we lack detailed characterizations coseismic ruptures at seafloor. Here, present comprehensive mapping a seafloor rupture caused 2004 M w 6.3 Les Saintes earthquake on Roseau normal fault in Lesser Antilles. We report visual characteristics, displacement profile, note pronounced asymmetry that bears similarities with well-studied subaerial ruptures. also identify footwall-derived wasted debris locally cover rupture, show ground accelerations 0.1–0.2 g can events well consolidated bedrock along unstable, over-steepened, scarps. Our study demonstrates potential underwater vehicles for hints key role shaping landscapes triggering events.

Quantification of mass wasting volume associated with the giant landslide Maleh Kabood induced by the 2017 Kermanshah earthquake from InSAR

Radar sensors obtain regular and frequent radar images from which ground motion can be precisely detected using a variety of different techniques. The interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) is utilized to retrieve the spatial characteristics of the largest coseismic landslide Maleh-Kabood, induced by the Ms 7.3 Azgleh earthquake in Kermanshah Province, Iran. The available seven interf...

Earthquake Ruptures on Rough Faults

Natural fault surfaces exhibit roughness at all scales, with root-mean-square height fluctuations of order 10−3 to 10−2 times the profile length. We study earthquake rupture propagation on such faults, using strongly rate-weakening fault friction and offfault plasticity. Inelastic deformation bounds stresses to reasonable values and prevents fault opening. Stress perturbations induced by slip o...

The repetition of large-earthquake ruptures.

This survey of well-documented repeated fault rupture confirms that some faults have exhibited a "characteristic" behavior during repeated large earthquakes--that is, the magnitude, distribution, and style of slip on the fault has repeated during two or more consecutive events. In two cases faults exhibit slip functions that vary little from earthquake to earthquake. In one other well-documente...

Coseismic Slip and Afterslip of the Great Mw 9.15 Sumatra–Andaman Earthquake of 2004

We determine coseismic and the first-month postseismic deformation associated with the Sumatra–Andaman earthquake of 26 December 2004 from nearfield Global Positioning System (GPS) surveys in northwestern Sumatra and along the Nicobar-Andaman islands, continuous and campaign GPS measurements from Thailand and Malaysia, and in situ and remotely sensed observations of the vertical motion of coral...

The paper will provide a summary of all lifelines performance in this strong earthquake. The paper will discuss the damage, emergency response, and recovery of electric power, telecommunication, transportation (roads and bridges), seaports, airports, water and wastewater, and their facilities. The impact as a result of the lifelines service interruption will be discussed; most important is the ...
